Fire-Rescue responds to early morning blaze at scrapyard

Richmond Fire-Rescue responded to a blaze at a Mitchell Island scrapyard early this morning.
City spokesperson Clay Adams said Fire-Rescue received calls about a fire around 2:45 a.m.
The fire broke out at 11760 Mitchell Rd. According to initial reports, there was an explosion, in addition to a fire in a heap of scrapped cars.
Several Richmond Fire-Rescue units arrived on scene and had the blaze under control around 4:15 a.m.
The fire resulted in heavy smoke in the surrounding area, but no immediate environmental impact or injuries have been reported.
Crews remain on scene, with heavy equipment being used to remove vehicles in order to completely extinguish the fire.
Mitchell Road is also closed in both directions, with RCMP controlling traffic and managing detours.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
